Oracy CPD for our English Hub – captivating, interactive and research based
Joshua Callaghan, The Arch English Hub, Greater Manchester and East Lancs
Our recent engagement with Talk The Talk oracy CPD programme has been an exceptionally positive experience, which has already influenced the practice of our English Hub delegates who attended. Oracy has been an often requested CPD offer in recent years, so expectations were high. The quality of the training not only met but exceeded expectations. The delivery was captivating from the start, and the trainer was warm, clear and engaging. Delegates consistently commented on how energising the sessions were and how the trainer created an atmosphere where participation felt natural and purposeful rather than forced.
One of the greatest strengths of the training was the way it combined research-informed principles with practical strategies. We were able to delve into the evidence base that underpins effective oracy, gaining a deeper understanding of why structured talk matters and how it supports wider outcomes. This grounding in research gave delegates confidence that the approaches presented were not only well-founded but highly relevant to the current educational landscape.
Equally valuable was the practical application woven throughout the day. Staff were given opportunities to explore activities, model techniques and practise facilitating high-quality talk themselves. The blend of demonstration and hands-on experience helped delegates to see exactly how the strategies could be implemented in their own classrooms and across whole-school systems. Delegates left with a renewed sense of clarity about how oracy can be intentionally planned, scaffolded and embedded in ways that will have a meaningful impact on pupils’ confidence, language development and overall communication skills.
The CPD offer was tailored carefully to meet the specific needs of our schools. The team took time to understand our context, which ensured the content felt relevant to both our current priorities and long-term aims. Communication throughout the process was excellent, with the whole Talk The Talk team being approachable, responsive and consistently professional. This level of collaboration made the planning smooth and ensured that the training delivered exactly what we hoped for.
Overall, Talk The Talk has provided our delegates with both the inspiration and the practical tools needed to strengthen oracy provision in their settings. The impact has already been felt in the enthusiasm and reflective conversations taking place across our schools and we are confident that the learning gained through this CPD will lead to meaningful improvements in the quality of talk for all pupils.
