Curriculum for England

Talk The Talk programmes support the English National Curriculum

  • A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others
  • All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society
  • The overarching aim for English in the National Curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word
  • Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • Are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate

Supports the National Curriculum requirements for English in Years 6 & 7

Learners are able to:

  • In Year 6,pupils’ confidence, enjoyment and mastery of language should be extended through public speaking, performance and debate
  • In Year 7, spoken language continues to underpin the development of pupils’ reading and writing and teachers should therefore ensure pupils’ confidence and competence in this area continues to develop
  • Teachers should develop pupils’ spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary as integral aspects of the teaching of every subject

 

Supports the National Curriculum requirements for English at Key Stage 3 & 4

Learners are able to:

  • Pupils should be taught to speak confidently and effectively in a range of formal and informal contexts, including classroom discussion
  • Pupils should give short speeches and presentations, expressing their own ideas and keeping to the point
  • Pupils should be taught to listen and respond in a variety contexts, both formal and informal, and evaluating content, viewpoints, evidence and aspects of presentation

Supports the National Curriculum requirements for English at Key Stages 3 and 4

Learners are able to:

  • Pupils should be taught to understand and use the conventions for discussion and debate, as well as continuing to develop their skills in working collaboratively with their peers
  • Participate in formal debates and structured discussions, summarising and/or building on what has been said
  • Working effectively in groups of different sizes and taking on required roles including leading and managing discussions

Supports the National Curriculum requirements for both English and Citizenship at Key Stage 4

Learners are able to:

  • Pupils should be taught to speak confidently, audibly and effectively for different purposes and audiences, including selecting and organising information and ideas persuasively for formal spoken presentations
  • Pupils should be taught to listen and build upon the contributions of others, asking questions to clarify and inform, and challenge courteously when necessary
  • A high-quality citizenship education helps to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society
